One month turned into eight months. My temporary assignment was coming to a close, and I began to panic.

I had lost my job at an automotive company and a business friend wanted to help me out. The position was just a temporary position in data entry intended to last about a month or so. I didn't complain; it was something, and I needed to pay rent. My job was to basically sort out documents and create order. I was able to create an electronic database for easy perusal and eventually become the "go to" person for information and supplies.

One month turned into eight months. My temporary assignment was coming to a close, and I began to panic. This was the moment where I had to decide to lean in and push for a better position, or lean back and leave after my assignment ended.

I chose to lean in. I asked my supervisor if there was another position I could fill even if it was completely different than what I was doing now. I was afraid of the changes if there were going to be any. Luckily, I was able to keep my current position but was given new tasks to ensure the flow of our department.

Eight months has now become five years.

I have since been entrusted with larger tasks and the outcome so far has been very rewarding professionally and personally. I have the trust of one of our directors, my fellow associates, and have outstanding relationships with all of my vendors.

I am glad I wasn't lax about the situation and chose to lean in and ask for something better.
