I changed careers to the healthcare industry so that I could help save more kids like Alexis.
My miracle daughter, Alexis, was born eight weeks after surviving her twin sister's death in utero. Alexis fought for her life for two and a half months in the neonatal intensive care unit and came home with an uncertain future, saved only because of the medical advances available. Her dad and I realized then that we needed to learn from Alexis about how she saw the world as a deafblind, nonverbal and non-walking child.
I changed careers to the healthcare industry so that I could help save more kids like Alexis. We have shared her journey—her smile, her resilience, her thirst for life and her pure joy—and received a global outpouring of support.
As I learned about technology and products in my company, I decided we needed to help develop an LED product for children who have limited residual vision. I solicited support from the management teams, and through outstanding management support and tight customer feedback, we are scheduled to launch the product in fall 2013.
My worlds collided wonderfully! Alexis struggles to use her vision and her hearing and to learn the most basic things. But now I am her customer voice at the office, explaining how she and her peers can see the world if we can build it. Like starting my own business, I feel like the proud parent to see the product grow, but it's even more powerful because I get to see the impact on students, including my own little girl. It provides so much meaning in my life to have my worlds collide and know that we're working to develop a product that can have a huge impact.
